Weed Control in Lawns
Before you even consider dealing with the weeds in your lawn you first need to improve the health of your lawn. A healthy lawn is more likely to be able to compete with invasive and dominant weeds.
Step (1) Mow regularly at a reasonable height with a sharp mower blade.
Step (2) Scarify your lawn, preferably in Spring, to remove any moss and thatch, and to open up the grass blades to air and light.
Step (3) Feed your lawn with a fertiliser appropriate for the time of year, temperature and weather conditions. We strongly advise using a specialist feed, NOT an all-in-one type product. Many all-in-one products produce flushes of heavy growth, and more often than not can scorch and burn your grass.
Step (4) Only when your lawn is looking healthier should you consider using a specialist lawn weed control product. Such products, applied correctly, will slowly kill the lawn weeds but leave the lawn intact.
Time and patience are important factors when dealing with lawn weeds. Many people choose a bank holiday weekend to rid their lawns of weeds in the hope the weeds will be gone by the following weekend. This approach almost always ends in disaster. If you are in doubt about what to do and when to do it, then seek the advice and help of a business like The Lawn Advocates.
